Reflections on a gathering

Ways we are together,
ways we are alone,
how we may find ourselves, at any moment,
far away or cozily at one

We wheel in orbits,
diverge and intersect,
strive to tune our harmonies,
reverberate, reflect

So many broad paths of opinions
can sweep on through us and divide us,
so many hidden little bridges
enable us to close the distance

Within this dance
of taking turns and sharing stories,
with things we say, that people really hear,
we lead each other to a shared oasis,
haloed, safe, belonging, dear

And what we still can’t say
peeks out, and wonders – maybe someday
it can bring its own intimacy –
when we build a safe enough container
that it, too, can emerge into the day.

Visiting

I brought my goal –
to weave the threads of happy,
to make our hosts feel seen and heard,
and glad that we were there

In doing so, I found myself happy  –
through places where our conversations
swooped and soared, and opening
of ways to see and understand

And the delight of receiving
a gift freely given – days
filled with beauty and joy
and opportunity
to leave our former stress –
really, why would we bother
to pick it up again?

Un(en)titled

I took myself out
of my narrow shaft of light,
the one I thought shone
only on me, the one that showed me up
as either worthy or unworthy,
but different, categorically, from others

How to explain this?
– it’s not to say
I don’t think I’m unique,
just no more so than anybody else,
it’s not to say the light
doesn’t shine on me,
just that it doesn’t shine on me alone

How could I have thought so?
All those years, that wondering
why I felt so lonely,
why friendships
could seem so hard to find
(looking for another
singular
shaft of light)

When all this time
all that I needed
was to look and see the sunshine
resting on every head,
on every life.

Juices

My friends of the Spirit –
we are called to celebrate,
from different sides of the country,
from different sides of the veil

It doesn’t matter where or when
we are -.this celebration
is of the gifts we bring,
juices gathered and concentrated down
by our experience,
truth we learn at first as image,
wrought out solid through our practice

I can feel close to you –
I can recognize the flavor
of your contribution –
scent of berry, spice, and honey
laces freshest air.
We don’t need to talk to share the blessing –
I feel it on the wind that you are there.

Easy Enough

It’s easy enough
in the sun and the wind
and the all too rare
time of conversation
to have my head filled up with nothing
as I dump grass seeds out of my boots
and pick them out of my socks

Its easy enough
to let the rhythm of the day
and the chirps and dramas of turkeys
and the quiet fact of friendship
have the last word.

In the afternoon

It may look like I’m weeding
but I’m harvesting — these dandelions
are destined for great things,
performing their wizardry
on crusty ground,
pushing through,
making room for more life

The sun was here briefly,
later the cold wind came through,
but didn’t deter us from harvesting
sweetness and strength
from the field of our connection
and the truth that is with us
wherever we go.

Sound Bath

We were all very happy to share
the stories of our success,
the odds we faced
and how we overcame,
and what instruction could be gained
from our example

But were we willing also
to give the gift of being
one who receives another’s words
and goes up higher?

How we all long for that kind of exchange!
—Where our words are taken in, and resonate
to match and amplify our starting tone,
so we together bathe in sound,
soaking in the rich harmonics
that make us feel ignited and at home.

Welcome Home

You can go ahead
and set those worries right down
in the hall. You don’t need
to carry them upstairs

Come in, relax — every part of you
is welcome. We will thoroughly enjoy
all that you are

Even Awkward, that funny half-relative,
can feel at home here.
We don’t take him too seriously,
which comes as a relief to him.
I saw him settling in, with new ease,
leaning in to the surrounding laughter

We’re glad you found us. Whether you traveled
five hours in a sleigh, or six in an airplane,
or ten minutes across the bumpy winter grass,
your coming makes our circle rounder —
your presence is desired.

After, after all

There is, in our connection, wonder.
Afterwards, when hollow longing
dogs our door,
let us remember:

All the light we forged
still glows within,
and the spark that made it
never lacks the fuel
to start a warming blaze
and to sustain the joy and purpose
that charmed us so, before —

There’s no cold aftermath
to anything that’s meaningful.
We live, after all, in the adventure —
we live the bright unfolding dance of life.

Happy Home

Happy to have home, and be home
happy for warmth
and the restitching of friendships,
happy for time together
and the space to be open-hearted,
happy for peace within

Happy for sunshine with crisp, cold edges,
happy for walking beneath blue sky,
happy for trees and their timeless embrace,
happy for miracles.
