Likeness

Liking is our nature  –
this is what we are like –
we match ourselves point for point
with other beings, and are delighted

We like what wakes up currents
inside ourselves, reminding us
of what we are. We like
what mirrors back our goodness,
we like what makes us feel
that we are liked

Let us remember:
No part of our being
requires us to dislike –
there is no judge condemning us
for failing to be snooty,
or unforgiving,
or for siding with the enemy
(or other team)

We can understand what’s true
by what we like,
what we are like.

Balance

In this fluid shift near the balance
of night and day,
the contrasts move past each other
in intricate dances –
fog licks in wisps around the drier air,
warmth blazes through the cool,
cool wafts through warmth

All the scents of change rise up,
morning sun and shadows interlace their fingers,
grass gleams with dew,
new green shoots amid
summer’s darkening brown.
Joy rises unbidden as the dawn,
sense of adventure
sweetening the day.

Yellowjackets

These days, officious yellowjackets
throng to our every task –
hanging laundry, chopping wood,
installing siding

And they seem to want to know  –
Where’s the cutlet that I ordered?
Who’s in charge here? And why
was I not told about these plans before?

Could be the season,
or my own myopia,
not speaking yellowjacket, not hearing
the urgent message they would relay

Or maybe, like New Yorkers,
and other eager noisy social beings,
they have a rhythm
that works just fine for them,
and who am I to question what they do?

Tree being

Little tree,
I thought I came to see you better
when I glimpsed the sprite within,
bright energy that spreads out
in your growing roots and limbs,
which then contracts in winter –
sentient strategist,
choosing your way to grow

But then I got an even clearer view –
how you are emanation
of the one intelligence that thinks us all.
Your sentience
is no more separate than mine,
your joy as much the thrill of life’s ride
as mine is.
The rush of being so precisely what you are,
as much a gift as mine  –
proof of our common Principle,
our parentage the same.

Wisdom comes

Wisdom comes from anywhere we ask for it –
every relationship
where we line ourselves up,
line for line, along the lines of any being
for whom we have the most profound respect

Whether it’s a plant, or is an animal,
an elder or and infant,
an angel or a colony of bees

We find it in the willingness to take the journey,
however it expands us,
the willingness to be untethered
from any given point,
to let the change unfold
wherever the connection moves us

Wisdom comes in the surprise
of never having thought that way before,
but knowing, certainly, that it is true.

Instruction

Following the path of bees,
of roots, I find myself wordless –
voices of instruction silenced,
the work at hand teaching
with the tools it finds in me:
fascination, patience,
admiration, willingness  –
these things that render me able
to ride the lesson through its bends and lurches
into the next moment

And I consider:
many are eager to instruct,
but they can only help me
when I have this attitude  –
can only pull me forward
when I stand in the present intelligence
that everything here reflects.
