The Calculus of Infinity

The calculus of infinity
reveals the scope of blessing
prepared for you and me
right here, right now

No relativity of merit,
no struggle to be worthy,
no need to earn, no need
to learn the way to make things better

No need to even calculate
if it was you or I
Who occasioned the smooth running
of communication, whose wisdom
brought the harmony we feel

This presence of the infinite
determines everything, occasions
the overflow of bliss, of brightness,
that we hardly dare to hope for
but which always has been ours –
the largess of infinity
right here, right now.

Absolute Value

We learn the value
of things we thought were nothing,
things we thought were torments,
places we thought empty

All these must bow,
they are compelled,
just at their striking point,
to show their truth, release their mystery,
must give place to the law
that only blessing comes,
and only good is given –
the law that turns them upside down,
makes of their threats
windows to heaven.

Walking in Truth

Feet step out in wonder —
Try to describe this,
soaring down the tailwinds,
bright spirited day after the squall

Flowers bloomed where she walked —
that was one way to say it,
joy meeting joy

not something precious or singular,
just the natural way of moving
and its expected effects

Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me
(I shall have a legacy of blessing)
all the days of my life

that’s a way to say it, too,
in the house of presence
where each breath
brings forth fruit.

Cup

Let me lift this cup of day
to my lips, let me taste
the light, the peppered challenges,
the satori of new illuminations

Let me lift the cup of this day
to my lips, let all the moments
kiss me with their inspiration,
let my thirst be ever quenched,
and my hunger — let it be awakened

Let me hold this cup of day,
this day, up to the light for blessing,
let me drink deeply, water to wine,
and in serving, let me be blessed.

The Blessing

morning-beach

You can’t walk away.
You can’t choose
not to be blessed

The blessing goes with you,
persistent as a taunt —
you may think you want to walk away
but you can’t

You can turn your back
on a thousand years,
on hundreds of your deaths,
you can focus in on countless framings
of the old story

You can wave your arms
and shut your eyes,
you can plug your ears and shout
(as you’ve been doing all this time)

But when you stop
you will feel the blessing
approaching as if from afar
like sunrise
where you realize
after a while
that the light’s been with you
all the time you were waiting for it
and you haven’t been shrouded
nor yet exempted:
the blessing has been here all along.
