Channels

MacKenzie golden afternoon

We are so at home together here
in the realm beyond the worries and the posturing,
beyond the trotting out of
constructs of ourselves
comprised of fear, resentment, and bravado,

We are home together here
where your sweet, responsive
flowing essence
runs so close against me,
merges in the harmony
of what we are
and what we now discover
in the streaming of our being
down the deep swift channels
of our common soul.

Choosing Life

gate

If I believe in death
I will see it throughout my life —
Death of friendship, death of love,
death of opportunity, of hope —
It will hang like shrouds across my eyes,
weigh down my face, lodge in my throat
and eat away at each of my endeavors,
sucking out the juice from every promise

If I believe in death
dread will hedge about my days,
purpose will seem hollow, dreams ill-fated

But if I believe in life
I will follow it through all its cycles,
I will feel the living joy
of pressing into the earth, and rising up,
will relish the adventure of each reconfiguration,
revel in the presence of enough

I will know that love, like life,
can never die,
won’t fade with time and distance,
won’t become a lie

If I flow in the abundance of my being,
I’ll keep on loving
and I’ll keep on living.

Mortality

Richmond beach, grey blue

Well, dying, after all, is no big deal —
People do it all the time
It is the logical conclusion
of the primal lie
that says you can’t have
that which you most want,
that says you have to suffer,
that says you have to settle,
that says you really don’t deserve
to be the essence of yourself,
which, when realized,
brings unremitting joy

It is the lie that holds us in captivity,
Captivity which always
assigns another tyrant.
keeps us struggling in servitude,
as long as we believe it,
with bouts of high stakes cat and mouse
played with despair

The slow or sudden pain of this
brings us towards death
(No living thing endures without its freedom)
We will choose to go there too
until the moment we become convinced
the lie has never owned us
And our own truth bears us witness
that life has boundless rounds of joy to give,
That it’s our true calling
to be our wild selves fully
and then we know
we shall not die, but live.

By Design

leaves falling

We don’t make the sun rise
but it does
We don’t engineer
the seasons’ changing,
And even our internal tides —
our breath and circulation —
don’t depend on our arranging
(Pay attention, oh me of little faith!)

In the splendor of the rolling days,
the mist, the clouds’ drift,
the uplift of leaves driven by wind,
In the gentle hand of sun-warmth
on the dampened land
there should be evidence enough

This life of mine,
more vast than I can comprehend,
is held in order
by a force beyond my own
and all the flights I dream and yearn for
are established
not by my efforts
but by my essence,
not by me
but by the Love that holds us all.

Reclaim Instinct

cards1a

To reclaim instinct,
understanding certain laws
will help:
The law of sacred trust,
The law of wonder,
the law that everything that’s real
is holy
and will fill its perfect purpose
in the ever-evolving
fractally refining
all embracing and enfolding
infinitely intricate
web of life.

Processes

Richmond beach gray

It’s OK to go down
all the way to the bottom
of your breath
It’s OK to stay there
for awhile
before the impulse
of the next inhale

These things move naturally —
There is a curve for turning
before the breath rises
and another one
up at the top

No need to panic —
You are not crashing
You will not fall too deep
and not be able
to come out

These systems have
their safe processes
They hold you sure and steady
and will turn you faithfully
when you are ready.

Certainties

doug fir and clouds

Nothing is less certain
than these constructs
whose markers loom so large
on all our landscapes
as if all meaning were defined
by shopping

Nothing is less certain
than the empire they support
which claims its power
over everything
but has no substance —
nothing true at all

Nothing is more certain
than the hum of life —
its impulse to connect —
and how each contact
multiplies life’s joy

Nothing is more certain
than the fact that life must win
by the simple truth
of being what it is.

Sustenance

boulder outcropping

In every wilderness
are rocks that can be struck for water
There is hope beneath the sand
Every living thing attracts
that which desires to bless it —
What it needs is there
and will come through

There is a power in everything
to summon what completes its arc,
There is a power in all of us
to meet what makes us spark,
When fear is banished,
the souls that shine alone
will call forth constellations from the dark.

A secret key

sunflowers any living thing

Every living thing —
any given one —
can be a spark —
They need no pedigree
to qualify

Any light
can lift you from the dark —
you need no name
to call it by

The images of dream may leave their mark,
smudging out the brightness of your day,
may tell you there’s no reason to embark
on what will likely hold
no goodness for you anyway

And when your own ignition
seems completely spent,
your shiny hope beclouded,
your intentions bent,
You needn’t go back under
to see where they went
for any living thing
can bring you out.

Life Water

life water

We start drinking
life water —
We take it in
with our eyes
and our pores,
We feel light,
We feel strong

We drink truth like water —
Truth that cleanses us
from all the years’ deposits
of calcified projections,
judgement, disapproval,
years of manipulations —
all those vain attempts
to make us be machinery,
polished on the outside,
programed,
silent

We drink life water
and feel the eager
expansion of our minds,
the bright embrace
of our reawakening —
Our breath, our limbs
now so responsive
to what impels us
from within.
