equilibrium

whirling in a balance
like a maple seed descending
in late afternoon of year
as the earth keeps rolling,
bending the low arc of light
more inward
in the grasp of shadows falling
as the lively air invites us
to the dance of bright leaves flaming
so the inward hearth light calls us
to its quiet steady warmth
and the potent stillness pulls us
to its radiating strength
so balanced – spinning outward
folding inward
we revolve
strength offsetting strength
love inspiring love.

Magic

A box unfolds
Each side becomes a box
These boxes each unfold
Each side a box again
Each box contains a story
that opens out its own world
its past
its cast of characters
an atmosphere
and changing seasons
days and nights, and different scents
Each story leads along a path
that changes everyone who walks it
taking them along while still contained inside its box
Each box in you
A gift
Each smile of yours a key
that you may give to one who sees
who then may open up a lock and know
a tiny thread of something in your soul
which, if they follow, leads them to your gold
The stories loop away but all return
—for one who has the patience to discover—
to that sweet core your essence hinted with your eyes
Whoever walks with you along this path
(in which you both will change)
will gain a prize.

Mending

So I go back
to those early days of anguish
when I didn’t know
how to make it right for you
When the hurts to you
brought back stabs of childhood wounds
which my defenses couldn’t cover
as they couldn’t shelter you
But now
I bring a new perspective
Something that I hadn’t seen before:
The current running through you — a light-river,
The roots that held you firmly to your source
much deeper than a child’s tight clinging
to a helpless mom —
comprising a most formidable force
If I had known of this
I wouldn’t have been anguished
If I can know it now, we both will be
unburdened of imagining you damaged
so moving forward whole, beloved, free.

Today’s gift

so touched
to the core
so held
nothing more
is needed
so loved
all the ancient questions
hold their breath
and then release
in sweet relief
their chronic tensions
slowly, dawns
awakening
a stretch that rolls and rolls
through waves of rising power
a fresh intake
of bracing inspiration
new meaning for this hour
hold it dear
and share it as you can
the crystal call for all
to know
they’re ever of the clan.

Learning Trust

to Love:

You told me how you’re learning
in measured, clear-eyed steps
how to walk the balance beam of trust —
To walk, real, in your love and still stay safe.
And when a trust was breached at night
You took yourself in hand
You said to yourself, “wait, how am I safe?”
and let the answer rise up from within:
“I’m here, and there are locks on all the doors
And we were not in any danger, even then
He was a human, even when intruding
and so was bound by countless human norms
the ones that keep us safe among each other
He didn’t try to do us any harm.
“But furthermore,” you said, “I’m always safe
because I’m Spirit, and Spirit never dies.”
I saw the calming truth of that
Shine, certain, from your eyes
— one more example of your practice
of this crucial art
Thank you for the courage of your open heart.

Emissary

I sat with you on the couch
your legs across my lap
me hugging them
willing my touch to span
the space between
my hope and your dread
to flock like emissary birds
to flutter by your head
and brush you with their wings
and softly coo
awaken all your inner angels
so they stand in force and tell you
you are not alone
you are not fallen
you are as strong as a brass horn
that chortles in the morning air
and summons great guffaws of joyous confidence
from wells in you
deeper than you ever knew were there.

Hearts’ Doors

For Susie, Carol, and Love

Each of these openings
Leads to infinity
Each of these gifts
Is enough
To knit together the world
Each of these women
Has a heart
That includes the sun
So will we shine
So, simply, tone the world whole
And as for us?
Well, of course
We’ll be included
Each of us
In the hug for us alone
We each so need.

Love Tuning

I weary of the stories
that keep running in a loop
I want to lay them down.
Quantum love is everywhere at once.
It doesn’t need to travel
doesn’t need to struggle
through the rough terrain of speculation
tenuous analysis of data
evaluation whether
there exists enough attraction
on the other side
to match one’s own.
Love requires no story
and engenders none.
Love was here before the words
and love endures long after
all the words are done.

Grace for Today

“Give us this day our daily bread;
Give us grace for today, feed the famished affections;”*

Today this verse
that I have heard
these many years
rang with potent meaning
in my ears
For now I notice
it affirms that I am hungry
that this deep gnawing, this distraction
is a need
that keeps me turning
since I yearn for something
surface day won’t feed
I yearn to move
in the strong current of affection
feel the tide of powerful connection
not to stand alone, to be unmoved
but to be moved in perfect balance
pouring out my care
into the network of our oneness
feeling the reverberation running back
filling in the ocean of my lack.

* From the Lord’s Prayer with Mary Baker Eddy’s spiritual interpretation

From a Conversation

Attraction is the need to give your gift,
She said. No need to choose from stories off the shelf
Each summons has its own configuration
Each connection will define itself
If you can keep yourself from predefining
Refrain from digging ruts into the groove
You’ll hear the music rise, find it aligning
With everything you’ve yearned to give and love
I’ve tried it some, she said, it has its sense
It keeps me in the moment where I am
To ask, what is my gift for this one instance?
Lets me be true to what just now demands
I can’t assuage my yearning altogether
But this is helping, and it’s getting better.
