True Reflection

These are not the signals
This is not the track on which you are fulfilled
Turn away from that mirror
Ask for the inner call
Seek your true reflection
in an ancient tree
or anything you can still find
of earth’s wildness
Pull up, from depths
the memories of times when you were sparked
When that deep surge of your aliveness
rumbled up like magma from your core

Feel the rivers of your inner landscape
rise to meet what you recall
Feel them roaring, thrumming, thundering
beneath your skin
In the glow that they engender
you will see yourself reflected
in the light you see responding
from other eyes
This is the true signal
This is how you know
what you are,
This is your shape, your shine, your size.

Wild

It doesn’t matter
when and how it started—
those first moments of the inner wildness,
The ones that stirred you
till you had to notice
Once you noticed
you had to pay attention
Once you paid attention
it had to grow
and will
Till suddenly it overthrows the systems
Colossal though they are,
and comprehensive, and entrenched
that claimed to rule you for so very long
Those systems have no power
against inexorable wildness
that always follows
the laws of your true essence
You will never again be tame
and you will know
that being good
has nothing to do with following someone else’s rules
and everything to do with being you.

Alchemy

Here is an alchemy:
Not lead to gold
But led by the golden
glow from within
that homes to its source-light
steady, unerring

Here is the alchemy
that we behold
as we leave the old focus
and step forward, bold:
This light-washed vision,
All dullness resolving
till everything shimmers
in life’s vibrant tones

This is the alchemy:
Not something changed
But something conceived anew—
Radical point of view
Suddenly lightyears from what we’ve been told
What we had thought was so
Now so illumined
everything that we see
is gold.

In this lifetime

In this lifetime
There is no “not”—
Sweet soul,
Though worlds may seem to wheel
beyond your reach,
Great stars blinking
lightyears away
Though your high teachers
may seem to move
behind a veil
which no travail
can pull you through
And though you’ve felt you failed,
with nothing more that you could do

Rejoice, for this lifetime
— long enough for every dance of grace —
of galaxies, of atoms;
too short for any tedium —
each moment needed, magical —
Has every joy that you can dream
And calls for you to claim it,
Own your name:
In this life
there’s time
for all of you to shine.

Reclamation

After the voice of scorn was banished
Other voices began to rise
tentative at first,
but gaining strength from each other
The voice of wonder
The voice of “of course!
You have a right to joy;
Of course goodness is the organizing principle!”
The voice of liberation
The voice of exaltation
The voice of a continual elation
Realizing every silenced hope
could claim its place
and start to sing again.

Clarity

Everything about my being
comes from my source
Not from the channels into which I flow
Not from the interactions that engage me
So if I feel splashed, diverted,
sullied or depleted,
I only need to turn
back to where the primal fount
of who I am
springs forth
and bubbles boldly
into being
and courses forward
Strong and pure and clean
Affirming and defining me again.

Facing the Void

She moves with confidence
She twirls, she beams
But when she turns to face
the empty space again
She loses steam
and rivulets of insecurity
start seeping through the seams
The gaps between perceived reality
and her most treasured dreams
Now seem to yawn
The fabric she has woven with her hopes
now seems to drift in disconnected threads

What builds her up again?
What deep, supporting truth
can she believe?
What calming voice can counteract
the howling judgment
that whistles down the hollows
of her bones?

A pause to gather courage, to rethink
and reassess the evidence
A confidant to give her new perspective
Or some kind of sign
So she will choose to rise again
and meet the challenge one more time
And this time maybe she will power through
face down the void
and forge herself anew.

Opinions II

Opinions are like snapshots
Frozen impressions
Maybe true in their moment
But static —
When you’re holding them
you’re not seeing
the moving truth of now

If you think that you’re comprised of your opinions,
Each time you meet someone you’ll  think
for you to get along, your opinions have to match
You’ll pull them out, negotiate
and maybe you’ll be sad
to find that no one there agrees with you

But if instead you know that you’re comprised
of the dynamic interaction
with what comes before your eyes,
with every opportunity to be amazed,
to understand and value things
in your inimitable way
to co-create the truth
with others who are present
You will find
remarkable confluence
of a satisfying oneness
and a lovely, bracing playground
for your mind.

Inner Lights

These lights shine independent
of our hooded fears,
our darting doubts
that cover them like wind-whipped cloaks
to make them seem to blink and waver
or our yearning plea that they be validated
as if to make them shine they must be seen

These lights we fight for,
strive, with all our rough-made tools
to protect
and strive, through strict regimes
to make more bright
Shine on their own.

Nothing we can do can stop their shining
Nothing we can do makes them appear
But still their beacon calls across the night
Their signal constant, radiant and clear.

Song of the Eternal Body

Each of us is anciently wise
Each holds the source
of the essential sequences of being
Each integrally joined
to that one primal course
The pulse of life, its elemental meaning

Funny how the secret waits so silently —
day by day does nothing to assert itself —
And yet, as oracle, will tell us when we ask
the things we thought were far beyond our grasp

Ripples of mirth, spreading of connection
Bands of support, in joyful integration
The poise of totally assured perfection
is celebrated here in exaltation

And it sings:
We are right here
Where music flows within
like breath, like blood
And light shoots through
like waves of impulse spreading
We are right here
We hold you timeless in the web of life
and everything comprising us is good.
