Stream

I stand beside, with,
along, along – the verticality
extends above, beneath,
with no end I can see,
an estimation of infinity

I touch the current,
above, behind my shoulder,
reach as for a subway strap,
step back into it, and race
up and down and up
within the current

And now define myself as this,
see that the story
of small unlikely glints of glory,
peaking through a mostly mindless structure,
was never what  defined me

No. This is where I understand
everything about myself –
size and shape and purpose,
sphere of harmony,
ribbon of peace.

Perfect

Well, you are perfect.
And not in the way of comparing you
with some external ideal,
not in the way of trial and judgment

But in the simple artless way
of being who you are, as no one else
can ever be, as everyone else is,
(intelligence never repeating itself
throughout the infinite creation)

Original and always true,
so loved in each particular,
so you, in every thought and each expression,
perfect through all time
and ever new.

Yellowjackets

These days, officious yellowjackets
throng to our every task –
hanging laundry, chopping wood,
installing siding

And they seem to want to know  –
Where’s the cutlet that I ordered?
Who’s in charge here? And why
was I not told about these plans before?

Could be the season,
or my own myopia,
not speaking yellowjacket, not hearing
the urgent message they would relay

Or maybe, like New Yorkers,
and other eager noisy social beings,
they have a rhythm
that works just fine for them,
and who am I to question what they do?

Individuality

We wake up
to find we are born with
a love for everything
that can say “I am” –
with its sensing, with its moving,
with the patterns it reprises
in its living, in its growth

It’s the individuality
of all these things,
and all these people,
that points to the infinity of Love,
big enough to intimately know
each one of us,
warm and bright enough
to fully care.

Owning it

Much is said, by many,
about the best way to live one’s life,
and I find myself,  with something
less than a thought,
releasing what opinions
I may have had
about that
and thinking,
Is not every life
destined to find its perfect resolution?
Is not every life
its own singular path?

Then how can anyone
standing outside of it
say the way a life should go?
And how can anyone live a life
without owning it?

Acceptance

acceptance

I think of this
as if it were utopia,
and yet it should be fundamental —
basic, unrestrained, whole-heart acceptance
of everyone for being who they are

That we could simply be ourselves together —
nothing to withhold,
nothing to bestow,
no accolades to earn, no shame to shrink from,
no hierarchy of “in”, of “hip”, of “cool”,

No chairs to win, tryouts to fail,
nothing to prevent us from just seeing
in ourselves and in each other,
the wholly uncontested and essential,
the deeply needed for the
part that no one else can play,
the curious, ecstatic, quirky wonder
of each of us —
Yes, that would win the day.
