Honest and good heart

This seed I am to sow
I need to plant where your soil is deep,
in your honest and good heart
which anchors your intentions
and will defend against
any false impressions
or dispiritedness

Your honest and good heart
will keep the seed,
will feel it, tend it, feed it
with its fertile warmth,
and hold the tender net – water and air –
that lets your life grow strong
and bear much fruit.

Free

Consider who you are,
the strength and grace comprising you,
your power and tenacity,
your will to live

Then you can know for sure
you have no obligation
to settle any scores,
to have reactions  –
don’t need to fix things
before you have the freedom
to stretch out, confident, into your being

Your integrity is your imperative
and it doesn’t wait
for vectors to align,
for others to act first.
You’re free to be completely true
to what you are. You’re free
to learn and do it every day.

Core

If I wanted to save someone  –
anyone  –
though I didn’t know them,
though I wished them well,
just in a general sense –
if I wanted to be of help somehow

Perhaps there’s a practice –
enlarging my tent –
in which I recognize
the core of power
present in everyone,
and how fervently
that core loves truth,
and how it is so nourished
by its own integrity
that no other proposition
affords temptation

How it doesn’t take a movement,
but just for that core
to rise up
in any heart, in any life,
and we will see corruption fall
like lightening from heaven,
collapse to nothingness,
and so many who were bound
will step free.

Stepping Up

More dangerous to me than hardship
is the vapid satisfaction
that accepts a lie about my being
because it’s not that bad,
that accepts a happy that is disempowered,
that lets a picture of a good life
obscure the depth and brilliance
of a life truly lived,
a life whose purpose is
to show the presence of
the good encompassing
the whole of being,
healing and including all the world.

State of the Union

I have no skills
to bring to the table

I have no table
to bring anything to

I didn’t learn
in all my years
to make connections
that could pull any strings

And yet I’m pulling
with any breath I can align,
with any thoughts that I can think,
to reinforce the patterns
I hope to see emerge

I’ll pray for justice,
I’ll pray to see integrity
rise up in people
who were self serving
up till now

I’ll pray we all will see each other
by our lights and not our flaws
and see a way for true direction
for our land.

Truth Rising

dawn truth

Truth rising like dawn
starts to reveal your form —
things you weren’t sure were part of you
start to stand out, you glimpse
the clarity of your imperative

And you discern
that you can never settle
for store-bought explanations
of what you are,
you can never settle for a life
that falls in a conforming line,
you can’t ignore integrity

What might have seemed
like just a few small harms
(not your concern, dictated, as they are,
by factors outside your control)
become abhorrent, become impossible

You see that you are all good,
and nothing else has any rights to your expression.
You see that standing up for this
is what you have to do.
No tallying of consequences.
The truth has risen.
